A Quiet Evening Practice for a Busy Mind

When your body is tired but your mind is still busy, Night Mandalas gives your attention somewhere quieter to go.

This 39-page printable workbook combines 6 original symbolic mandalas with soft guidance, intentional colour guidance, breathing practices and visualisation to create a slow, screen-free transition from an active mind towards a quieter evening.

There are no reflection questions to answer and nothing you need to figure out.

Instead, each practice gently shifts your attention away from analysing and towards something simpler: the movement of your hand, the colours in front of you, your breath and the sensations of your body.

You don’t need to empty your mind.

You don’t need to find an insight.

You don’t need to make yourself fall asleep.

You simply give your mind less to do.

SIX NIGHT MANDALAS

The workbook moves through six different ways of settling into the evening:

Grounding the Senses
Bring attention out of your thoughts and back towards touch, weight, breath and physical sensation.

Softening Thought
Let thoughts remain present without needing to follow, organise or resolve them.

Heart of Calm
Use gentle attention, colour and breath to create a quiet centre to return to.

Letting Go of Control
Loosen the need to manage, perfect or finish everything before allowing yourself to rest.

The Descent
Move gradually from the activity of the day towards deeper quiet and inward attention.

Dream Threshold
Let colour, breath and imagery become softer as wakefulness begins to give way to rest.

You don’t need to complete them in order. Choose the mandala that feels right for that particular evening.

LESS THINKING. MORE SENSING.

Night Mandalas is intentionally different from a traditional reflection journal.

When your mind has already spent the whole day thinking, planning, and processing, another set of questions can simply give it more to work on.

Night Mandalas asks for something different.

There are no questions that need clever answers and no conclusions you need to reach.

Soft Guidance sets the emotional direction of the practice.

Color Guidance helps you choose a palette that supports the atmosphere of each mandala without telling you exactly what to do.

Breathing Practices bring attention towards the rhythm of the body.

Visual Reflections invite you to remain with colour, imagery and sensation rather than return immediately to words and analysis.

And throughout it all, your hands have one simple thing to do:

colour.

The intention is not to think your way into calm.

It is to give thinking a little less space while colour, rhythm, breath and physical sensation take a little more.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF EVENING ROUTINE

Night Mandalas isn’t another task to complete before bed.

There are no streaks to maintain, pages to fill in every night or perfect routine to follow.

Some evenings you may read the full guidance, choose your colours intentionally, colour slowly and finish with the breathing practice.

Another night you may open directly to a mandala, pick up a pencil and begin.

You don’t even need to finish it.

The practice ends when you feel ready to stop.

That is part of the idea.

NIGHT MANDALAS MAY BE FOR YOU IF…

Your body feels tired while your thoughts are still active.

You find yourself replaying conversations, plans or unfinished tasks once the day becomes quiet.

You want something to do in the evening that doesn’t involve another screen.

You enjoy colouring but want something more intentional than a collection of colouring pages.

Traditional journaling sometimes feels like more thinking when you already have enough thoughts.

You are drawn to gentle mindfulness, breathing, body awareness or creative rituals.

Or you simply want the transition between day and night to feel slower and more intentional.

HOW TO USE IT

Choose a comfortable place and soften the light.

Select whichever of the six mandalas feels right that evening.

Read its Soft Guidance and Color Guidance, or go directly to colouring if you prefer.

Let your hand move slowly through the pattern.

Notice the pencil against the paper. Notice colour. Notice your breathing. Notice the weight of your body where you are sitting.

If you want to deepen the practice, follow the accompanying Breathing Practice and finish with the short Visual Reflection.

There is nothing you need to discover and nowhere you need to arrive.

You are simply giving your attention somewhere quieter to be.

HOW NIGHT MANDALAS FITS INTO MANDALA ROOM

Night Mandalas is a standalone evening practice, not Step 4 of the Mandala Room Method.

The three-step Mandala Room Method explores a broader journey:

QUIET THE NOISE → REFRAME → RE-ENGAGE

Night Mandalas takes the same underlying idea — using mandala colouring as more than a colouring activity — and applies it to one particular moment of everyday life:

when the day is over, the body is tired, but the mind hasn’t quite followed yet.
